I was supposed to be driving to Maryland today, and Vermont tomorrow, however my car decided otherwise. I hit a pothole literally a mile after leaving which caused a sidewall blowout. Now I have to wait till Wednesday for a new shaved Pirelli to arrive from Tirerack. Trip cancelled. oh well.

Shaved?

Shaved down to match the diameters of the other tires on the car. In a AWD car is is really bad for the transmission and differentials to have tires with different sizes. To avoid having to buy a complete set of 4 brand new tires whenever you have an issue with one you instead buy a single tire and have it shaved down to match the other 3.

Yep. Tire rack will shave down a tire to match the tires on the car.

New tire with shaved down tread so the diameter of the replacement tire is close to the existing ones.

Now I remember - the Car Guys used to give that advice all the time regarding AWD cars.

Yep. It's a shame I can't just run a new Pirelli, but I've gotta have a shaved one.

At least someone will do it - the woman who called in years ago about her Subaru could not find anyone to shave a tire, and was prowling junkyards for something about right.

I'm pretty sure tire rack is the only one who will do it.
